About Spiti Valley
Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain valley in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, sitting at an average altitude of 3,800 metres. Accessible from only two roads — the Manali–Kaza Highway (via Rohtang and Kunzum Pass, open June–October) and the Shimla–Kaza Highway (via Kinnaur, open most of the year but treacherous) — Spiti receives fewer than 25,000 tourists annually, preserving an authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture. Key Monastery (Kee Gompa) at 4,166m is the largest in the valley and dates back 1,000 years. Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 AD, is called the Ajanta of the Himalayas for its ancient murals. Chandratal (Moon Lake) at 4,300m is one of India's most pristine high-altitude lakes. The villages of Langza, Komic (one of the world's highest villages), Hikkim (world's highest post office), and Kibber are accessible via rough jeep tracks and offer extraordinary homestay experiences.
Best time to visit Spiti Valley
Peak Season (June – October): Manali-side road opens late May/early June. September-October offers the best visibility, stable roads, and cold but clear nights near zero at Kaza (3,800m).
How to reach Spiti Valley
Most visitors approach Spiti via the Manali–Kaza route: drive from Manali to Kaza (198 km, 8–9 hours) via Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass (4,590m). This route is open roughly mid-June to late October. The Shimla–Kaza route via Kinnaur (450 km, 2–3 days) is open longer but involves more precarious mountain roads. There is no commercial airport near Spiti; Bhuntar (Kullu) is the closest at 250 km. Our packages operate in convoy with experienced Spiti drivers only.
Things to do in Spiti Valley
Essential Spiti experiences include staying overnight at Chandratal Lake, visiting Key and Tabo monasteries, driving to Komic and Hikkim villages, fossil hunting in Langza, and exploring the Pin Valley National Park (Snow Leopard territory). Stargazing at Spiti is extraordinary — minimal light pollution at 4,000m. The Spiti River offers basic white-water rafting (Grade 2–3), and several multi-day treks connect Spiti to Ladakh and Kullu valleys.
Why Visit Spiti Valley?
Truly Remote
Spiti is structurally different from Manali: average altitude 3,800m, rough unpaved roads, basic guesthouses, no mobile data in many areas. This is real wilderness travel.
Ancient Monasteries
Key Monastery (1,000+ years old), Tabo's Ajanta of the Himalayas, and Dhankar perched on a cliff — Spiti is a living museum of Buddhist heritage.
Stargazing Capital
At 12,500+ ft with zero light pollution, Spiti offers the clearest night skies in India. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Legendary Road Trip
Manali → Rohtang Pass → Kunzum Pass (4,590m) → Kaza → Key Monastery → Chandratal. Minimum vehicle: SUV with high ground clearance. One of the world's great drives.
