About Shimla
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, sits at 2,206 metres in the outer Himalayas and served as the summer capital of British India from 1864 until independence. The town's character is distinctly colonial — The Ridge, the neo-Gothic Christ Church, Scandal Point, and the Victorian Gothic architecture of the Grand Hotel and Gaiety Theatre create a streetscape unlike any other Indian hill station. The Lower Bazaar and Lakkar Bazaar buzz with local commerce beneath Victorian facades. Beyond the colonial core, Shimla offers diverse landscapes: the forested Jakhu Hill (2,455m) topped by a Hanuman temple, the meadows of Shali Tibba, the 10 km snowfields of Kufri, and the broader Fagu and Naldehra valleys. The UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train, running across 103 tunnels and 864 bridges, is one of India's most beautiful rail journeys and a heritage experience in itself.
Best time to visit Shimla
Summer (March – June): Peak season with 15-30°C weather. Perfect for families escaping the plains heat. Winter (October – February): Snowfall in December-January. Magical winter scenery but cold (0-10°C). Best for couples.
How to reach Shimla
The nearest airport is Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti (23 km), served by limited daily flights from Delhi. Most visitors arrive by road — Shimla is 343 km from Delhi (7–8 hours), 118 km from Chandigarh (2.5–3 hours), and 255 km from Manali (6–7 hours). The Kalka–Shimla Heritage Railway (narrow gauge) from Kalka Junction takes 4.5–6 hours and is a UNESCO-listed experience worth taking at least one way. Our packages include road transfers from Chandigarh airport or Shimla bus stand.
Things to do in Shimla
Must-do experiences include walking Mall Road and The Ridge at dusk, taking the toy train from Kalka or Barog, visiting Jakhu Temple and spotting Shimla's resident monkeys, snow activities at Kufri (10 km), and playing golf at Naldehra Golf Club (one of India's oldest). The Viceregal Lodge (now Institute of Advanced Study) and Christ Church are architectural highlights. Shopper should explore Lakkar Bazaar for woodcraft and local woollens.
