About Dalhousie
Dalhousie is a hill station in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, spread across five forested hills — Kathlog, Potreyn, Tehra, Bakrota, and Balun — at an elevation of 1,525 to 2,036 metres. Founded by Lord Dalhousie in 1854 as a British summer retreat, the town retains much of its colonial character: St. Francis Church (1894), St. Andrew's Church, the Subhash Chowk market area, and the winding Bakrota Hill Road (3 km walking circuit) are all from the colonial era. The main attraction near Dalhousie is Khajjiar — a 2.5 km circular saucer-shaped meadow surrounded by dense deodar forest at 6,500 ft, often called India's Mini Switzerland (the Swiss Ambassador planted a marker in 1992 certifying the resemblance). Other highlights include Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary (9 km), Chamera Lake (28 km) for water sports, and the old town of Chamba (56 km) with its famous 10th-century temples.
